Top 3 Internet Speed Test Sites

Knowing what speed your internet is can be very important. Even though your internet service provider (ISP) will tell you what speed you’re paying for, that doesn’t mean that is the actual speed you’re getting. To know what your internet speed really is, though, you need run the test on a server that will give you accurate results. One of the keys to telling if a speed test will give you accurate results is the number of server locations. Testing at multiple sites will help you ensure you are getting an accurate result.

Here are the three top internet speed test tools available.

Speedtest.net

Speedtest.net is by far the top internet speed test available. Speedtest.net has a very sharp, easy to use interface. This site boasts over 2,500 servers. Running a speed test at Speedtest.net is as simple as clicking “Begin Test” button in the middle of the screen. You will test your ping time, download speed, and upload speed, and you will have the ability to share your results. Speedtest.net offers options for a direct link, buttons to share directly to Facebook and Twitter, and HTML codes to share in forums or as an image.
Speedtest.net offers multiple options you can control, such as language, time zone, date format, distance, speed measurement, and preferred server, all without creating a profile. Speedtest.net automatically chooses the best server for you, but you also have the option to test with a server other than the one automatically selected. The only drawback to Speedtest.net is the number of advertisements you see on nearly every page of the site. Of course, those advertisements are what makes it possible for Speedtest.net to offer you such powerful testing servers at no cost to you.

Speedof.me

Speedof.me will remind you a lot of Speedtest.net. The layout is similar, even down to the color scheme. Despite this, Speedof.me is very different from any other speed test out there.
Running a test at Speedof.me is simple, you only need to click ‘Start Test’ in the bottom left corner of the screen. You will see a series of waves appear on the graph screen as the test takes place. Your final results will appear in the bottom left corner. Speedof.me does not contain a lot of bells and whistles and only provides download and upload speeds, but Speedof.me is a very powerful testing server.
Speedof.me is different from a lot of other speed tests in that is is an HTML5 test. This means it does not require flash or java to run. It will work on smart phones as well as desktops and laptops. Speedof.me utilizes CDN (content delivery network). If you’re unfamiliar with this, you can read more here. Rather than require a test server near you, Speedof.me tests your speed to several different servers, as well as downloading large contiguous sample files, mimicking internet normal internet activity.

MySpeed from Visualware

MySpeed is not a user-friendly test, but it is a very powerful java-based testing server. Running the test is not a simple one-click operation. You’ll select your location, the option you want to use (Quality, Speed, VoIP, Route, IPTV, Video, and Firewall), then the city nearest you. On a new page, you’ll have to “click to start test”. You will see your actual results, as well as some other statistics that MySpeed provides. MySpeed provides multiple options to view your results, including a simple summary, an advanced summary, and an indepth report (this requires clicking on a link on the simple summary page).

One of the major drawbacks to MySpeed is that it has a limited number of servers available. If there is not a server near you, you will get inaccurate (slower) speed test results. MySpeed does offer a lot of testing options that you will not find anywhere else.

No Remote Desktop License Servers Available

A client we were working with was having issues connecting to one of their servers. When trying to RDP to a Server 2008 R2 machine, they kept receiving this error message:

The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license.
Please contact the server administrator.
According to Microsoft’s Website, RDS and the License Server works like the following:

When a client—either a user or a device—connects to an RD Session Host server, the RD Session Host server determines if an RDS CAL is needed. The RD Session Host server then requests an RDS CAL from a Remote Desktop license server on behalf of the client attempting to connect to the RD Session Host server. If an appropriate RDS CAL is available from a license server, the RDS CAL is issued to the client, and the client is able to connect to the RD Session Host server.
Although there is a licensing grace period during which no license server is required, after the grace period ends, clients must have a valid RDS CAL issued by a license server before they can log on to an RD Session Host server.
In this case, we were receiving the error message because the 120 day grace period for the license server had ended. Even without the license server, Windows allows for 2 RDP sessions to the host machine. The problem was that RDP sessions were opened without being logged off, essentially filling the 2 RDP slots, and with the license server down, we couldn’t issue anymore.

If you need more than 2 remote sessions to the server chances are you will need to purchase RDS Cals from Microsoft. However, in our case, they didn’t actually need Remote Desktop Services.

To fix the problem, it is easiest to do it directly from the host machine, however, if you don’t have access to the host machine, you could try RDPing with the admin command

Open a command prompt and type:
mstsc /v:IP-OR-HOSTNAME /admin

Obviously replacing IP-OR-HOSTNAME with the machine’s ..IP.. or.. Hostname…
To remove the Remote Desktop Services role:
  1. Click Start
  2. Type Server Manager and hit enter
  3. Click and Expand Roles
  4. Click Remove Roles
  5. Click Next
  6. Uncheck Remote Desktop Services
  7. Click Next
  8. Click Remove
  9. Click Close
  10. Click Yes to restart
  11. Wait for restart
  12. Connect to the machine again and allow the Role Removal to complete.
  13. There should be an OK or Finish button.
This will get rid of the error message. Any user connecting after the first 2 RDP sessions will get a prompt asking which session they would like to take over.
Alternatively, if for some reason you can’t remove RDS, anytime you receive the message, you could log into the machine directly or through admin RDP and remove old RDP sessions:
  1. Right click on the task bar
  2. Click Start Task Manager
  3. Click the Users tab
  4. Right click on the old RDP sessions (sessions not labeled as console) and click Log Off

That should clean out the old sessions and give you 2 sessions to use.

Partial specs for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 leak

The rumor mill is starting to churn Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumors and the market is getting pretty excited. It is expected that Samsung will introduce plenty of new features and new specs in the upcoming phablet.
According to a report, the alleged Samsung Galaxy Note 4 will rock a 2K display. Additionally, the purported handset will be dust and waterproof. This will be the first time that the Galaxy Note will be protected from liquid and dust.As far as the processor is concerned, Samsung should pack the latest Snapdragon as well as its Exynos chipset. Rumor also suggest it will come with a 128GB storage option, as well as a 20MP camera.

Some of the rumored features of the device :
  • A three-fold display with 2K pixel resolution. This is in terms with Samsung’s plans to release qHD displays sometime later this year.
  • It could be powered by an eight core chipset that would be either the Snapdragon 805 by Qualcomm or its own new Exynos processor. It is expected that the Note 4 will come packed with the rumored Android 4.5
  • Lollypop OS that is expected to be revealed at the Google I/O Conference. It is still unannounced that the new OS would be 5.0 or 4.5.
  • It is also rumored that the S-Pen will have more functions and capabilities as it is expected that Apple will be releasing its own stylus with the name iPen.
There is no official confirmation about the launch of the handset from Samsung. However, we could see Samsungs new phablet unveil at IFA 2014 in Berlin.

Is your Android device laggy? Here’s how to fix it!

It happens to everyone, no matter what kind of make or model of device you own: as time wears on, your device starts to slow down and lag. It may be because you’ve downloaded power hungry apps or it may be because your cache has filled up to the brim. Regardless, it’s annoying and while sometimes a quick reboot will temporarily solve the issue, we’re delving a little bit further into some of the mains causes and solutions to these issues.

Clogged Memory

When you start to reach the limit on the SD card on your device, should you have one, you’ll notice that your device starts to slow down. If you’re showing signs of lag on your device and you’re using at least 80% of your storage capacity on your SD card, it might be time to go through your storage and do some cleansing.

With SD Cleaner, or a similar app,  it’ll log all the unnecessary files on your SD card that you can trash without any complications, mostly cached files and other miscellaneous files that will help clear up some space. However, always be careful when you’re deleting files and make sure you’re not deleting something important.

Clear the cache

Yeah, it seems super simple, but sometimes we forget that apps start to cache more and more data as time goes on. Thankfully, you can go through and delete the cache yourself manually by heading to Settings > Apps and selecting a particular app and then hitting the Clear Cache button. However, if you’ve got an abundance of apps, this will soon become really cumbersome and time consuming.

If you’re looking for a quicker method, you can grab an app like App Cache Cleaner, which will do all the work for you with a few taps on your device. It’ll list all the apps that currently have cached data stored on your device and then you can pick and choose which ones you want to clear, or do it all in one fell swoop.
