Disable Firefox's Hardware Acceleration to Fix Slowness

If Firefox is misbehaving, there's a chance its Hardware Acceleration feature is causing problems. Weblog Tweaking with Vishal recommends turning it off to solve problems with startup times, blurry fonts, and more.
Firefox has hardware acceleration set to "on" by default, but it's still young, which means some video cards or drivers might have problems with it. Vishal found that it solved his long boot times (9-10 seconds), and others have had similar results (as well as fixing blurry fonts on some machines). It isn't a cure-all for everyone, of course—you may notice no speed changes at all—but if you're having some serious problems, it's worth a shot. Of course, it could just be all those add-ons you've installed too.

To turn it off, just head to Firefox's Options and go to Advanced. Uncheck "Use Hardware Acceleration When Available."

Delete Firefox auto-complete entries

Instructions:
Just start to type in into the form field until the grey dropdown appears, then use the cursor keys to move to the entry to be deleted and press the SHIFT key and the delete key. Voila!

Mozilla Firefox Offline Installer

It’s been known for many, many months that Firefox 18 would deliver a substantial boost in JavaScript performance. Release day has finally arrived, and Mozilla’s updated browser is now ready to install with the brand-new IonMonkey JavaScript engine that delivers gains up to 20% over its predecessor. In its official announcement, the Foundation does some understandable chest-thumping about Firefox’s enhanced ability to power through intensive web apps and games. IonMonkey has also been bolted on to the Android version of Firefox 18, so mobile Mozillans should notice these impressive gains, too.

Initial support for WebRTC has also landed. Although the communication spec has not yet been finalized, it’s already part of Google Chrome, Opera, and now Firefox. The goal for WebRTC is to offer a powerful, flexible communication framework that can be accessed by developers using standard web code. In addition to the not-yet-official WebRTC standard, Firefox 18 has also implemented support for W3C touch events — which will no doubt become increasingly important as Firefox OS begins to find its way into the mobile marketplace.

Firefox 18 has plenty of other improvements in store — but again, most of them are under-the-hood and not user-facing. Tab switching performance and overall startup time is better than ever, and Firefox 18 users that are behind a proxy should also notice some speed gains. Those of you who own a Mac with a Retina display will now get to take full advantage of that extra pixel density in Firefox, as version 18 adds full support for Apple’s high-resolution screens.

Downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems are available now at getfirefox.com. As always, existing users will be automatically updated. If you’re the impatient type and want to force an update, just click the Firefox menu and choose help and then about.

Reset BIOS Password Without Taking Out CMOS Battery

Two popular ways to reset BIOS & BIOS password are using the BIOS reset jumper and taking out CMOS battery for more than 15 minutes. Sometimes, taking out CMOS battery form the motherboard to reset BIOS might not be the solution for you, especially when it is a laptop system.

CMOS De-Animator is a software based solution that allows you to clear and reset your system’s BIOS configuration, thus clearing the BIOS password. The software is very useful since you don’t have to open the computer casing to look for BIOS reset jumper or the CMOS battery. The only downside of CMOS De-Animator is you will need to be able to boot to Windows with administrative right.

If you can Boot into Windows...

All you need to do is run the tool as administrator (right click -> “Run as administrator”) and click the Proceed button followed by restarting the computer. When your computer boots up, you should see a CMOS checksum error where it allows you to access the BIOS without a password. CMOS De-Animator works by invalidating the checksum of your system’s CMOS memory which resets all settings to default and clears any stored BIOS passwords upon reboot.

Know your Smartphone Screens

There comes a point in time when everybody either wants or needs to buy a new phone. It might be today, or next year, but the fact remains that you will upgrade your phone.
Whenever my friends have found themselves wanting to upgrade their phones I have noticed they are usually unsure of what all the technical terms mean, a problem they share with most people. But the term that seems to cause the most distress appears to be none other than screen type. I was about to write up a quick explanation about them but I ran across as excellent article on cnet australia which we have also incorporated into this article. The article goes over the basic screen types, their explanation and also takes a brief look at touchscreen technologies.

Display technologies

Smartphone displays, like notebooks and tablets, are all based on LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) technologies. LCD has a fast refresh rate, which makes it great for mobile technologies that require bright displays with low power consumption.
TFT LCDthin film transistor displays are easily the most common in smartphones at this time, though manufacturers are paving the way for newer, better performing screen technologies. TFT LCDs are often used in laptop displays as well.
Advantage – Cheap to make, most commonly used screen.
Disadvantage –  Aging Technology, Not as bright or clear as other display technologies.
AMOLEDactive matrix organic light emitting diode is one of the prominent up and coming display technologies looking to take over from TFT displays.
AMOLED screens are visibly more colourful than TFT displays and have a lower power consumption with thanks to the intriguing fact that the colour black is produced by the OLED being switched off. AMOLED screens have been used by Samsung, HTC, Nokia and Dell to name a few, and continue to be in high demand. They give off clear, bright and sharp images as seen in the images below. The potential problem with AMOLED screens is that they are quite poor in direct sunlight, and the screen will be close to unusable.
Advantage – Bright and clear quality, Low power consumption for screens.
Disadvantage –  Almost un-viewable in direct sunlight, Display can appear pixelated.

The top pictures are LCD, the bottom two are AMOLED (Notice the screens below have a more ‘vivid’ color)
Super AMOLED — Samsung has positioned itself at the forefront of mobile display technologies producing its “Super” variant on the AMOLED display. By combining the touch panel and the top layer of glass, Samsung has created a screen that is visibly more vibrant than previous AMOLED screens, and more usable in direct sunlight.
Advantage – Everything AMOLED is but better, great for watching videos on.
Disadvantage –  Still poor in direct sunlight, but better than regular AMOLED.
Super AMOLED Plus – Another Samsung fortified screen technology, which is available on the latest Samsung Phone Models. It is an advanced version of the Super AMOLED technology with better colour reproduction and scaling. Not as bright as Super AMOLED, but better. More subpixels are crammed into the screen tech, allowing it to be more pleasant for your eyes.
Advantage – Amazing color reproduction, better viewing angles.
Disadvantage –  Not good enough in the sun yet, colours can seem washed out on larger screens.
AMOLED CBD — A Nokia only technology in which their latest phones use an AMOLED Clear Black Display (CBD) screen which results in deep blacks. A CBD displays blocks incoming light reflections and so perform better under direct sunlight. Generally considered on par and sometimes better with Super AMOLED Plus with superior contrast and colours.
Advantage – The best screen under direct sunlight, deep blacks.
Disadvantage –  Does not take full advantage of AMOLED features.
Super LCD (SLCD) — another contender for screen dominance is Super LCD. A variant of traditional LCD technologies, SLCD offers better contrast and warmer colours than older LCD displays, but is said to drain more power than AMOLED displays.
Advantage – Cheaper to produce than AMOLED displays, Works better in direct sunlight over AMOLED.
Disadvantage –  Drains more power than AMOLED displays, not as bright as AMOLED either.

As you can see, the left AMOLED screen is brighter and sharper Super LCD screen on the right. However, the Super LCD screen displays a ‘warmer color tone’ (meaning it defines color better).
IPSin-plane switching smartphone screens are characterized by vibrant colours and excellent off-axis viewing angles. IPS screens are typically more expensive, but the result is a screen you can see clearly from any angle. Apple recently employed IPS technology in the LCD display of the iPad and iPhone 4 (which they are also referred to as Retina Screens in the iPhone 4 only). IPS has a resolution 960 x 640. This basically means that an IPS Display uses a SLCD screen, but packs more pixels which improve quality
Advantage – Able to create a more viewing angles than other displays, able to zoom in with more clarity
Disadvantage –  Expensive to create, very few companies use this technology so far
QhdQuarter HD Screen is exactly how it sounds, as it has quarter of Full HD. Full HD resolution is considered 1920 x 1080, so quarter HD is 960 x 540. It is not quite as good as IPS technology, but it’s has a great looking screen resolution on any device! Qhd is not a screen type, but the amount of pixels in that screen, exactly like Retina Screen’s.

From left to right – iPhone 4 (IPS Retina Display), HTC Desire (Super LCD), and the Samsung Galaxy S (Super AMOLED). While it is quite difficult to tell from just photo’s (we recommend you actually have a look at them in person), we can probably assume that the Super AMOLED is brighter than either the Super LCD or IPS Retina Display (all phones are on maximum brightness). However, if you were to take a closer inspection at these phones, you would realise that The Super LCD screen and IPS Retina Screen are less ‘pixelated’ (meaning the pixels are packed tighter, giving it a clearer image) than the Super AMOLED screen.
Verdict – Truth is, there are quite a few people that don’t care about which screen types they are getting, but we want to change that. You’ve seen the advantages and disadvantages of each screen type, so your choice of screen type will depend heavily on how you will be using your phone, so you will have to decide yourself what screen type to get.
We personally quite like Super AMOLED displays. They have bright and vivid colors on display, which makes it great for general use and an absolute joy when it comes to watching videos. Despite being difficult to see under direct sunlight, it gives the brightest colors of any of the screens giving it a slight edge over our other favourite - the IPS Retina Display.
Phones that use Super AMOLED Displays – Samsung Omnia 7/Focus,  Google Nexus S, and the Samsung Galaxy S2.
You now have a basic knowledge of the different screen types available today and hopefully, an appreciation of the new technologies available to you. So next time your out picking up a new phone we hope you will take the screen type into account, because we guarantee you – they do make a difference in the long run.
Other things to note:
You may hear these terminologies used when refering to Mobile Phone Screens. Here is a breakdown of the Name, what it stands for, and the resolution.
  • QVGA: quarter VGA (240×320 pixels)
  • HVGA: half VGA (320×480 pixels)
  • WVGA: wide VGA (480×800 pixels)
  • FWVGA: full wide VGA (480×854 pixels)
  • nHD: one-ninth high definition (360×640 pixels)
  • qHD: one-quarter high definition (540×960 pixels)
  • 720p: 720p Resolution screens (720×1280 pixels)

Sony Cyber-shot HX50 camera announced

I don’t know about you, but it seems to me that camera manufacturers do have secret meetings from time to time, discussing among them just when is the right time to roll out their new batch of cameras – all simultaneously, to confuse the masses, and most of the time, the hardware that is newly released too, would also be more or less the same that makes things all the more confounding. Well, Sony has come up with yet another digital camera, the Cyber-shot HX50, where it will boast of a powerful new compact that features an impressive 30x optical zoom range, sporting an advanced 20.4-megapixel “Exmor R” CMOS image sensor.
The Sony Cyber-shot HX50 measures approximately 4.4″ x 2.6″ x 1.2″1 in size, where it tips the scales in the region of 9.6 oz., clearly placing it as the forerunner to pick up the gong of being the world’s smallest and lightest camera that sports a 30x optical zoom capability. In order to complement the extensive zoom, the new Sony Cyber-shot HX50V camera will feature enhanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization in order to help you reduce camera shake as well as blur regardless of the range. At full zoom extension (30x), the HX50V camera will be able to deliver stabilization levels that is approximately twice as effective as the HX200V high-zoom model that was introduced last year.
As for the high-resolution 20.4 megapixel sensor that features in this new camera, it will be accompanied by a powerful BIONZ processor, which would enable this shooter to produce high-resolution, high-quality images regardless of the lighting conditions, be they broad daylight to dimly lit interiors as well as everything in between. Not only that, the new HX50V camera will also feature built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, making use of Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile application that works on both Android and iOS app platforms that allows it to wirelessly transfer photos and videos to a compatible smartphone or tablet.
The asking price for the new Sony Cyber-shot HX50V compact digital camera would be approximately $450 as it arrives later next month.

Sony’s New Digital Recording Binoculars – Up Close and Personal

I guess I wouldn’t call myself a birdwatcher, but there are quite a few interesting creatures hanging out around my house, most notably a very noisy Woody-Woodpecker type bird that startles me awake each and every morning, believing someone is firing an automatic weapon at my house. I’d love to get some pictures of that bird, but I always seem to miss the “moment”
Well, Sony has an answer to some of those missed wildlife moments, or even some of that quick sports action that usually passes you by… Check out Sony’s DEV-50V new, smaller, lighter, and weatherproof HD digital recording binoculars. This second generation of binoculars not only gives you excellent viewing, they also give you the ability to to take HD video with stereo sound, or snap 20.4 megapixel stills with just the touch of a button, and low light is no problem!
The DEV-50V is actually 30% lighter than the old models and includes splash and dust resistance, so a little inclement weather shouldn’t rain on your parade. The DEV-50V has a variable zoom that allows you to zero in on your “target” with a magnification range of up to 25X and it utilizes a new Hyper Gain function which electronically increases brightness in your viewfinder, so you can locate and frame things even in dim conditions.
These binoculars also have an electronic autofocus, so theres no need to manually focus, like with your old low tech binoculars, and it keeps things sharp even if they’re moving. Yes, the DEV-50V has geo-tagging capability and it lets you record scenes in awesome 3-D! I love it! The new DEV-50V digital recordable binoculars from Sony will be available in June for about $2000. Yikes! I might have to save up some cash, but rest assured, either way – I’m going to “shoot” that bird.
